Holiday Traditions

In the spirit of the Christmas season approaching, I thought it was essential to share a tradition that is near and dear to my heart.

Every year, I bake my Nana and Grandad’s famous Cherry Cake for Christmas.

Let me tell you – I am not a cake person by any means, but this Cherry Cake is one of my most favourite pastime traditions at Christmas.

Every time I bake this recipe, the aroma of the smell brings me back to memories of when I was a little girl in my grandparents house.

I reminisce of memories of them and visions of having a ‘spot’ of tea with a piece of Cherry Cake in their kitchen.
It’s my absolute favourite.

Here is the Recipe if you all would like to try it:

In Memory of Those Who Gave Their Lives in Service of Our Country

On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, we pause to remember ????

More than 2 million have served throughout our nation’s history and made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Today we pause for a minute of silence to honour the courage and sacrifice of all the men and women who served.

Having come from a Military Family and both Grandparents serving in the War, today marks and always will – such a special day in history for us to pause and reflect. It’s a time to remember our past as well as those who continue to serve and protect our country.

Forever grateful for your service, courage and sacrifice.

Today we remember.
Lest we forget. ????

Maple Ridge B.C.

As your local Realtor, representing the Fraser Valley and Tri-Cities Area in B.C. it’s a bit of a passion project for me to discover things to do in our communities. Today’s highlighted area is Maple Ridge B.C. ????

For all you nature lovers out there Golden Ears Provincial Park is a must see. Lush with old growth forest, waterfalls, creeks, lakes and trails there is no shortage of ways to connect back to the earth in this 62,540 hectare park!

Love golf? Well this city has 3 nine hole courses not to mention the additional 5 eighteen whole courses in the bordering city of Pitt Meadows. That’s a lot of golf for cities that have a combined population of just over 87,500.

Looking for a place where you can get fresh produce, yummy treats and exposure to numerous local artisans? Look no further than the Haney Farmers Market located in Memorial Peace Park running from May 1st – October 30th (9am-2pm)

Of course there are plenty of other local businesses to check out and beautiful neighborhood communities to live in! If you’re thinking of making the shift out of the city and into a bit more of a rural setting, let me show you around the beautiful city of Maple Ridge! ????

Gratitude

“Showing gratitude is one of the simplest yet most powerful things humans can do for each other.” — Randy Pausch.

I hope this season finds you safe and well. Many of us have had to get creative connecting with friends and family. As we move into the holiday season, I feel that connecting and showing gratitude will go further and will mean more this year than ever. Here are a few thoughtful gift ideas that you could send a loved one to show your gratitude.

When thinking about shopping this season, consider buying local. I sincerely hope you have a wonderful holiday season. If there’s anything that I can do to help you and your family this year, please reply to this email or give me a call.

This year, I know many families are leaning on traditions (or creating new ones) to keep the holiday season as jolly as possible.

Here are some unusual and fun ideas to try with your family this winter – including the one my family made up!

SECRET SURPRISES: Put together a gift basket for someone in your neighbourhood, and leave it on their doorstep to make them smile. Whether it is silly or sweet, the size doesn’t matter. It’s about letting someone know you are thinking of them.

THE CHRISTMAS PICKLE: Hide a pickle in the tree, and the first person to find it gets a small extra gift. Sure, you can buy a pickle ornament, but I suggest you go crazy and hide a real dill pickle in there!

WINTER SOLSTICE: The shortest, darkest day of the year is celebrated around the world by many cultures. Look up the traditions of your ancestors, or make up your own! Whether you spend the day in pyjamas or make your own lanterns, here are some ideas to get you started: https://www.rd.com/list/winter-solstice-traditions/

FIND A CHRISTMAS TREE:CLARK GRISWOLD STYLE
This past year my family and I created a new tradition for our family. Have you ever watched National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation? In the movie, Clark Griswold created this tradition every Christmas to take his family into the ‘Great Outdoors’ to find the ‘Perfect’ Christmas Tree.

We’ve now started this same tradition. The only difference is we don’t cut down the largest tree where the branches shatter the windows in our house, and flying squirrels don’t attack our family (thank goodness!).

It’s those “small” moments, when you drink hot chocolate with your children in the fresh mountain air that remind you: these traditions are what my children will remember and will tell their children, and maybe even carry on every holiday as well. And if you haven’t watched National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, it’s definitely worth a watch this holiday season. Christmas wouldn’t be the same for us without watching that movie!

What does your family do every year? Share your special traditions in the comments. Who knows? Maybe you’ll inspire someone to try something new.

10 Barbecue Hacks

If there’s anything we’ve all learned this summer, it’s finding fun ways to spend time with our families. One of the most delicious ways that I’ve spent time with my family is by firing up the grill for a backyard barbecue or Bar-B-Que or BBQ. No matter how you spell it, it’s a fun, delicious way to have fun at home. I’ve found a few hacks that might help you up the ante on your barbecue game

1. Keep the Ugly Bottles in the Fridge Put condiments in a muffin tray and use popsicle sticks for labels.

2. Avoid a Sticky Grill Make sure your grill doesn’t have sticky grates by rubbing half an onion over it.

3. DIY Individual Ice Cream Cups Add individual scoops of ice cream to cupcake liners the night before and freeze. Simply serve at the party.

4. DIY S’mores Pot Use small terracotta pots, tin foil, and a little charcoal to make personal DIY s’mores roasters.

5. Use Natural Mosquito Repellent Use sage over a fire or on your grill (after cooking) as a natural mosquito repellent.

6. Create Ambiance Add fun lighting using your holiday lights.

7. Set up Various Yard Games Set up creative games like human ring toss, a three-legged race, or water balloon fights.

8. Keep Your Drinks Cold Freeze water balloons as ice to keep your beverages cold.

9. Make fun Mocktails/Cocktails Create a few mocktails that can be easily turned into cocktails.

10. Create a Giant Bubble Wand for Kids Use a kiddie pool and a hula hoop to create a giant bubble wand.

Whether you’re grilling over gas or fire, I hope that you enjoy your barbecue. If you have any tips, I would love to hear them. to summer!
